UNITED NATIONS, March 28 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply saddened by the death of at least 39 people in a fire Monday night at a Mexican immigration agency, his spokesman said on Tuesday.

Dozes of migrants were killed and more were injured in the fire at the National Migration Institute building in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez near the U.S. border, according to local media.

Guterres "conveys his deep condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to the injured," Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, said in a statement.

"The secretary-general calls for a thorough investigation of this tragic event and reiterates his commitment to continue working with the authorities of countries where mixed movements of people occur to establish safer, more regulated, and organized migration pathways," added the statement.
