NM LGBTQ+ advocacy group makes election endorsements

A New Mexico LGBTQ+ advocacy group believes the stakes are high in this year's election and has endorsed a list of candidates it said will fight to protect the communities' rights.

Nathan Saavedra, director of policy and people for Equality New Mexico, believes it's the most politically dangerous time for gay and transgender people since the 1980s HIV and AIDS epidemic. And while the state is currently a safe, affordable place for LGBTQ+ people, he said those who would reverse the culture should not be allowed to gain ground in political representation.

"LGBTQ people are facing escalating threats to safety, healthcare, as well as just fundamental rights across the country," Saavedra contended. "This is not the moment for candidates who offer one-liners. It's the moment for people who do the hard work."

The group makes endorsements based on candidate questionnaires, which are later vetted and approved by the board of directors. Saavedra explained all statewide endorsements fall into three categories: Champion, Fighter, and Candidate. They are based on each applicant's commitment to LGBTQ+ residents and queer justice.

The state's first semi-open primary on June 2 allows independents to choose either the Republican or Democratic primary to vote in without having to register with either party.

New Mexico is one of 36 states electing governors in 2026. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is term-limited after two four-year terms. Equality New Mexico has endorsed Deb Haaland for the office, also a Democrat and the first Native American appointed to a U.S. Cabinet position, serving as President Joe Biden's Secretary of the Interior.

"She's been a staunch advocate for LGBTQ folks throughout her track record as a public servant," Saavedra emphasized. "We believe she will take New Mexico in the direction that it needs to go and protect LGBTQ communities."

The governor's race includes a second Democrat, three Republicans, and one Independent. Another top Equality New Mexico endorsement went to Matthew McQueen, who's running for Land Commissioner on the Democratic ticket.

Saavedra stressed it is a critical office, as the Trump administration accelerates resource extraction and works to lift oil and gas drilling bans near Chaco Culture National Historical Park and the Upper Pecos watershed.
